ActiveCampaign and HubSpot get compared constantly, and most comparisons stop at a feature checklist. That misses the part that decides it for a small team: they are priced in completely different ways. ActiveCampaign charges by the size of your contact list. HubSpot charges by the number of people on your team who log in, then adds limits on marketing contacts.
So the real question is not “which has more features?” but “which bill grows faster for a business like mine?” We worked through both with prices read on October 17, 2026.
Full disclosure: we make DoubleScale, a WordPress CRM. It appears as short side notes where it genuinely solves a problem, and in its own section near the end. Everything about ActiveCampaign and HubSpot comes from their own pricing pages.
Pick ActiveCampaign if email marketing automation is the engine of your business, one or two people run it, and you want deep workflows without paying per seat.
Pick HubSpot if a sales team needs a shared CRM with pipelines, call logging and meeting links, and you are ready for per-seat pricing as the team grows.

Vendor pricing pages, October 17, 2026. HubSpot Starter was on offer at $7 per seat when we checked.
What will each one cost you?
ActiveCampaign (billed annually) starts at $15 a month for 1,000 contacts on Starter, rising to $39 at 2,500 and $149 at 10,000. Plus costs $49, $95 and $189 at those sizes and removes Starter’s five-action limit. Pro ($79, $149, $375) adds advanced segmentation, predictive content and three users; Enterprise starts at $145. Starter and Plus include one user.
HubSpot sells its Customer Platform per seat, billed annually: the free CRM covers two users, Starter is about $20 a seat a month at regular price, Professional $90 and Enterprise $175, with HubSpot credits for AI and automation on paid plans. Marketing features are also limited by the number of marketing contacts on your plan.
A worked example: three people, 2,500 contacts
| Setup | Yearly licence | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| ActiveCampaign Pro (3 users included) | $1,788 | Full automation, advanced segmentation |
| HubSpot Starter, 3 seats (regular) | $720 | CRM, simple automated emails |
| HubSpot Professional, 3 seats | $3,240 | Full workflows, lead scoring, reporting |
| DoubleScale Basic, 1 site | $99 + sending | Automation, pipelines, unlimited users and contacts |
Licence only, annual billing. HubSpot marketing-contact tiers and DoubleScale’s email provider (about $0.10 per 1,000 emails on Amazon SES) come on top.
The cheapest HubSpot option is also the most limited; the moment you need real workflows, you are on Professional.
Our take: ActiveCampaign has the edge for marketing-led teams; HubSpot Starter only wins if you can live with simple automation.
Who builds better automations?
This is ActiveCampaign’s home turf. Its builder branches on almost any data, waits until conditions are met, tracks site visits and events, runs split tests inside an automation and, on Pro, predicts the best send time. The one trap is Starter: five actions per automation is enough for a welcome email and little else.
HubSpot’s automation depends heavily on the tier. Starter gives you simple automated emails; full workflows with branching and lead scoring arrive with Professional, which is where most of the per-seat cost sits.
Our take: ActiveCampaign has the edge for depth at a lower price.

Which is the better CRM for selling?
HubSpot was built as a CRM first, and it shows: deal pipelines, tasks, call logging, email tracking, meeting scheduling, quotes and sales reporting, all designed for a team that works deals together. The free CRM alone is genuinely useful for a founder tracking contacts.
ActiveCampaign has deals, pipelines and lead scoring as part of its sales CRM features on higher plans, and they work well for marketing-led teams who hand warm leads to one or two salespeople. For a full sales team, HubSpot is the more natural home.
Our take: HubSpot has the edge.

How hard is each one to set up?
Both are hosted, so there is no server to manage. HubSpot’s onboarding is famously smooth, and its free tools let you start without a card. ActiveCampaign asks a bit more of you up front, mostly in planning automations, but its templates and recipes shorten that a lot. Both have WordPress plugins: HubSpot’s has 200,000+ active installs (4.3★), ActiveCampaign’s 40,000+ (4.5★).
Our take: HubSpot has the edge for getting started.
